Shabby Fabric Flower Grapevine Wreath

I have been making these burlap and muslin floral wreaths for my shows.  I recently finished a custom-order for a friend...She wanted one that was a bit larger for her new house.

I used a variety of materials for the flowers...tea-stained muslin, burlap, Warm & Natural batting, jute, buttons...I even crafted the wreath from wild grapevines that were growing up through a maple tree in the woods at the edge of our yard.

I love the way it looks showcased against this old door bench in my entryway--I just may have to make one for myself!  I currently have a vintage book-page wreath on the door, but this might be a nice change out.

The bench was created a couple of years ago by my son using an ancient door from our old farmhouse, plus some very old, very wide boards that had been stashed in the attic.  One board was wide enough for the seat and sides--you don't find lumber like that anymore.  He originally made the bench to sell, but when it didn't get any takers at the barn sale, he gifted it to me!  :)

  1. How did you manage to get it so round and not sag with its own weight? I make simple unadorned wild grape vine wreaths but I have found that the more vines I add to flesh out the wreaths, the wreath starts to sag at some point once it is hung up. Is there a way to deal with this issue?

    1. I try to use some of the thicker vine, at least to start with--about 1/2" inch diameter--as long as it is pliable enough for me to shape it...I just twist it around and wrap the vine around itself to keep it together, adding lengths as I go until it is the size/thickness I want it. I did make my wreaths ahead of time and let them stacked on my porch to dry out. I haven't had a problem with them keeping their shape. They are also actually rather lightweight when done.
If you are not letting them dry before hanging them, maybe letting them lie flat until the vine dries out may solve your problem.

That reminds me, I have another stack on my porch that are probably dry and need stored for the winter! Good luck with your creations...thanks for visiting! Smiles...Bev

    2. Thanks, Bev. I do let my wreaths dry out, but maybe not long enough -- I get impatient to use them! I made one up a few weeks ago when I decorated for autumn. It sat more or less flat on my kitchen floor for a few days and then I used it in a couple different places for an autumnal accent. No pretty decorations like on your wreath, mine is just vines. I like how it turned out but it's a little "skimpy" looking, needs some more vines added. It looks pretty "wild" with dried up stems still attached from where I plucked leaves off and they are sticking out every-which-way. I must remember that patience is a virtue :)

    1. Thanks...life is a little crazy here right now, but maybe I will work on a tutorial sometime soon...I do enjoy when others share the process for their creations. I would like to make some of these wreaths for an upcoming show, that may be just the opportunity to create the tutorial! Smiles...Bev
